Family & Children’s Photography Session FAQs |

Whether you're booking your first family session or returning with your third baby, we know questions come up. From what to wear and how to prep the kids, to how soon you’ll get your gallery—we’ve covered it here. No guesswork, just honest answers to help you feel ready, relaxed, and excited.

  • Simple, comfortable clothing in soft, neutral tones works best—think whites, greys, beige, oatmeal, denim, or muted earthy shades. Avoid bright colours, logos, and busy patterns. Soft textures like knits and linens photograph beautifully.

After booking, you'll receive a full prep and wardrobe guide to help you style your session with confidence.

  • A mix of both! I gently guide you into natural positions that feel relaxed and connected—never stiff or overly posed. We pause when needed, let little ones lead when they need to, and make space for the magic moments in between.

  • Petite sessions run for around 20 minutes—ideal for kids and siblings. Full family studio sessions typically last up to 1 hour, giving more time for group shots, cuddles, and a relaxed flow. Outdoor sessions vary slightly depending on location and light.

  • Many sessions fill quickly—especially seasonal offerings like Knight by Light or holiday mini sessions. I recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance when possible. If bookings are full, you can join the waitlist and be notified when new dates are released.

  • Petite sessions are perfect for toddlers, siblings, and primary and secondary-aged children. Full family sessions are ideal for all ages, including parents and grandparents. Everyone is welcome—this is about capturing your story, whatever season you’re in.

  • Petite Portraits is based in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay. The studio is calm, light-filled and designed to make you feel instantly at ease. Once booked, you'll receive all the details you need—address, parking info, and what to expect on arrival.

  • Absolutely! Full family sessions are designed to include up to 6 people as standard. If you'd like to include more relatives (like grandparents or cousins), we can extend your session and adjust image quantities accordingly—just mention this when booking.

  • Yes! A second outfit is welcome, especially for full sessions or if you're bringing siblings and want a bit of variety. For Petite sessions, one outfit per child is usually perfect. Bring pieces that are easy to change in and out of quickly.

  • This happens more often than you’d think—and it's okay! Kids are unpredictable, and I work at their pace. I build space into each session to allow time for warm-ups, snack breaks, or a quick reset. No pressure, no judgment. Some of the best moments come from those unexpected turns.

  • Yes! Knight by Light Adventures are seasonal outdoor family sessions, held around scenic locations in Hawke’s Bay. They’re relaxed, colourful, and full of movement—perfect for families who love to be outdoors. Spaces are limited and open a few times a year, so keep an eye on the calendar or join the waitlist.

  • You'll receive a proof gallery of your best images within 2–3 weeks. From there, you can choose your included images and select any extras you'd like to add. You can upgrade to the full gallery or explore print and frame options straight from the online gallery.

  • All final images are delivered via a private online gallery. You’ll receive both high-resolution files for printing and web-resolution files for easy sharing with friends and family.

  • Yes, each image is hand-edited with care. I keep things natural—removing distractions like fluff or crumbs, softening any harsh lighting, and gently retouching if needed. No heavy filters, just a clean, timeless finish.

  • We offer both! You can choose from fine art prints, matted frames, albums, and gift vouchers—all designed to complement your session’s style. Everything is printed to archival standard and made to last for generations. You'll receive a full product guide with your gallery.

  • Absolutely. Life happens! If you or a little one is unwell, just let us know with as much notice as you can (ideally 24 hours). We'll happily reschedule your session or offer a refund minus a small admin fee.
